T20 Session: Global Alliances in a Fragmented World
Monday May 5, 2025 14:00 - 15:15 CEST DIALOGUES / TOWER VIEW (1st floor)
Speakers: Bambang Brodjonegoro, Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, Jennifer Feller, Sachin Chaturvedi, Zongyuan LiuAs global challenges continue to multiply in scale and complexity, robust international cooperation is more essential than ever. Platforms such as the G20 and BRICS have emerged as critical arenas for shaping global governance, but how effectively do they complement - or compete with each other - in addressing pressing global issues?
This session will explore the evolving relationship between these two major alliances, examining areas of alignment and divergence. As G20 is reaching its first full cycle, the session will reflect on the progress made since the grouping’s inception to ensure it remains an effective platform for global governance, particularly in the light of the upcoming US G20 presidency in 2026. Meanwhile, BRICS is expanding its influence and reach, positioning itself as the voice of the “global majority” and raising questions over its role in reshaping the global order. While key areas of collaboration, such as advancing the SDGs, are well-recognized, the session will focus on defining the concrete steps these alliances can take to deliver tangible results.
